Introduction
The Grove Herd of Pedigree South Devons was founded on 16th March 1977 by Mr and Mrs W H D (Douglas) Scott at The Manor of Groves in Hertfordshire, and moved to Gloucestershire in 1988. It has become a highly respected and successful herd, achieving impressive statistics, awards and sale prices. Douglas Scott is a past president, past chairman of the South Devon Herd Book Society, and president of the World Association of South Devon Breeders 2002-2005.
The aim of the herd has always been to build on the natural excellent qualities of the South Devon (notably fast growth, size, maternal qualities, docility, and ability to convert grass) to produce superior beef animals. To this end performance is fully recorded and used for selection in the breeding programme. At the same time welfare is a priority - the herd is grass-fed and over-wintered indoors on mainly silage. No feed types implicated in BSE have ever been used and the herd has been completely unaffected.
